Common signs

  • Tears running down the cheek since birth
  • Sticky discharge that keeps coming back
  • Watering in one or both eyes that does not settle

How we treat it

Treatment depends on your child’s age and what the examination shows. Many blockages clear on their own, so we may simply watch and show you how to care for the eye. If a blockage does not clear, a small procedure called probing may help.

Adult DCR is not the usual treatment for a baby.

What to expect

  1. Before the visit

Note when the watering started, whether there is discharge, and which drops you have used.

  2. Examination

Dr. Samir checks the eye and tear drainage, and looks for rarer causes such as childhood glaucoma.

  3. Your plan

He explains what to watch for, and whether probing may be needed later.

Common questions

Will my baby’s blocked tear duct get better on its own?

Many improve during the first year. A blockage that lasts needs a plan for your child.

Should I start drops or massage at home?

Ask us first. We confirm the cause and show you the right care for your child.

What is probing?

A small procedure to open a blocked tear duct that has not cleared. If it is needed, we explain the timing and anaesthesia.

Does sticky discharge mean conjunctivitis?

Not always. A blocked duct can also cause discharge, so the eye should be examined.

When is it urgent?

Painful red swelling, fever, light sensitivity or a cloudy-looking eye. Get medical care straight away.
