When it may be needed
- A shadow or curtain moving across your vision
- Sudden loss of vision
- Bleeding inside the eye, or a macular problem
- Surgery has been advised for a retinal condition
How we treat it
Vitrectomy removes the gel inside the eye so the surgeon can treat the retina. It is used for retinal detachment, bleeding inside the eye, diabetic complications and some macular conditions. Sometimes gas or silicone oil is placed in the eye.
Dr. Meera explains what the operation can do for your eye and how your vision may recover.

Common questions
Is a suspected retinal detachment urgent?
Yes. Get your eyes checked straight away. If we are closed, go to the nearest eye emergency service.
Will my sight come back as soon as the retina is repaired?
Recovery depends on the condition and the health of the retina. Dr. Meera explains what to expect for your eye.
Can I fly after surgery?
Not while there is gas in your eye. Ask your surgeon when it is safe, and tell any other doctor or anaesthetist about the gas.
Can I follow another patient’s posture or drops?
No. Your position, drops and reviews depend on your own operation.
